SKIES Unlimited: Yoga

Come and discover how yoga can benefit your child from early ages. We have two wonderful instructors and they have several courses for different age ranges. For more information call Parent Central Services.

Instructor Cynthia Carlisi

Cynthia has been teaching yoga since 1987. She is certified, and was co-owner of Yoga Motion Studio in Phoenix, Arizona during the 1980s & early 90s. Her gentle and fun style includes consideration for all ability levels. Cynthia has taught children of all ages, adults, and seniors, plus international and wilderness adventure classes. She began practicing yoga in Arizona, in 1978, for the physical benefits of balance, strength, and flexibility. Her instruction focuses on these three physical areas, along with concentration, focus, compassion, and mindfulness.

Parents participate with the younger children, guided by the instructor. For children 5 and under, attention spans ebb and flow. In these classes, (3-5) the children are permitted to wander away from the circle and re-enter as their attention is drawn back to their parent’s activity. While the children explore the safe environment within eyesight of the group. The parent has a chance to focus on a yoga stretch for their own benefit. Children naturally switch from exploring to re-connecting, and the class doesn’t require strict behavior of the little ones, though parental guidance is the norm. Mainly, the little ones stretch with their parent, and both learn beneficial activities to do at home.

Parents who join the older children will follow the teacher’s guidance through postures that the children are doing. Interaction with children may include partner stretches, and assists. Children 6-10, and 11-16 may wish to focus on peers rather than family members, so the parent participant may use the time to concentrate on their own guided yoga, and be supportive of the children’s needs, as the attention to learning yoga can fluctuate within any class. Observing the children, and participating with them according to the instructor’s guidance, makes a fun class for family time.

Infant - 1 year: Taught in circle format, the infant/baby class benefits both parent and child with flexibility. The parent holds the child, and they move together in sequences beginning with standing balance postures, forward folds, gentle back bending, side stretches, and arm stretches, all coordinated with breath awareness.

3- 5 years: Class begins with everyone in a circle, holding hands. The yoga stretches are taught as if playing games, in sequences with animal names for basic yoga poses. Breath awareness is incorporated through animal sounds, or silly faces. The circle creates a team effort for standing stretches, and balance. The class moves onto the floor where circle play includes front, back, and side stretches with toes touching, hands holding, arms reaching, and more. Students learn basic control of their bodies, through fun activities. Students and parents are guided in a short quiet relaxation time, laying on floor, at the end of class.

6-10 years: Yoga Play for 6-10 year olds in circle yoga includes balance and stretch sequences that challenge students. Forward bends, gentle back bends, side and leg stretches are done with some hand holding, and some independent balancing on one leg poses. Students are encouraged to focus on one spot for better balance, which may improve their ability to concentrate. After standing, the class will get onto the floor for more flexibility training with forward bends, gentle back bends, and spinal twists, with interactive partner stretching. All activities are non- competitive and safe. Students are encouraged to incorporate them at home. A resting time at the end of class requires silence and stillness, guided by instruction on relaxation.

11-16 years: The circle format is used, so all students are included with the group. Class starts with standing forward bends, gentle back bends, side stretches, and twists. Proper body alignment is taught, and awareness of the feet is emphasized, to emphasize feeling supported, metaphorically and physically. Breathing instruction during stretch movements guides students to mindful awareness of body functions like digestion, respiration, and heart rhythm. The class will learn basic “downward dog” and classic poses, and transition onto the floor for seated forward bends, gentle back bends, and spinal twists. Class will end with a relaxation in silence, laying still on the floor. Attention and respect towards the instructor is required in all classes.
