April is Autism Awareness Month

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. We now know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, and each person with autism can have unique strengths and challenges. Some facts about ASD include: Autism is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the U.S.; signs of Autism usually appear by age 2 to 3. Often, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months; Autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children.

Many people with autism also have sensory issues. These can include aversions to certain sights, sounds, and other sensations. For those who have a child with ASD and are receiving therapy, Tricare has given temporary coverage for telehealth therapy. Since routines are important much so for children with ASD, abrupt changes may lead to exacerbating behaviors. This is why it is essential for them to continue receiving therapy and continue practicing therapeutic techniques at home.
