Today you will visit Kato Paphos, the harbor and downtown district named the 2017 European Capital of Culture. Many historic and cultural treasures have been unearthed in the Paphos Archaeology Park, including the mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, all of which are extremely well preserved after 16 centuries underground; the Tombs of the Kings; Roman Agora and the ancient Odeon Theatre. Paphos Harbor also features the medieval Paphos Castle and multiple seaside restaurants with both indoor and outdoor dining along its family friendly promenade.
During your return to Limassol, you will stop at Kouklia, formerly known as Old Paphos. Inhabited since the Stone Age, Old Paphos was one of the most famous and important sites dedicated to the worship of Aphrodite in the ancient world. Aphrodite’s Rock is where the goddess of love was said to have risen from the sea. Legends state that anyone who swims around this exposed sea stack will be blessed with eternal beauty, but the rough waters at the base of the exposed stone tower make attempting this a bad idea. A better idea is to set up for long exposure photography or time lapse video and capture unique and enchanting photos and videos of this one-of-a-kind rock formation.
Saturday: Free Day
Limassol is the second largest urban area in Cyprus and its extensive beachfront is often called the “Limassol Riviera”. The blue star flagged beach and the surrounding waterfront offer you many different ways to have fun on, in or under the water. The warm water temperature in the Mediterranean Sea allows SCUBA diving throughout the year and in addition to both indoor and outdoor swimming pools the hotel features a 5* PADI Dive School, while many third party vendors offer Catamaran cruises and sunset sailing off of Cyprus’ southeast coast.
Sunday: Free Day
Limassol is located between two ancient city-kingdoms, Amathus and Kourios; you may choose to visit either or both. Kolossi Castle is associated with the third crusade and Richard the Lionheart, who declared the regions Commandaria to be “The wine of kings and the king of wine”. Inside the Limassol Public Gardens you will find Limassol Zoo which is home to a wide variety of wildlife on its 15 acre footprint. The Limassol Marina is a 430,000 square foot recreation area packed with restaurants, taverns and shops directly adjacent to the old port and the Limassol Molos, a multifunction park and one of the hot-spots of the city, featuring multiple sculptures, playgrounds and piers. Outside of town, but still within easy reach you can find Fasouri Watermania, Cyprus’ largest waterpark.
Monday: Free Day
Your beach hotel makes it easy to forget that Cyprus is a mountainous island. A visit to the Troodos National Park with a local guide might be just the thing to take your weekend to new heights, literally.
