Labor Day Weekend in Lisbon

Spend Labor Day Weekend in the city that CNN called “The Capital City of Cool”, Lisbon.

Note: This event has already passed.

Greek legends claim that Lisbon was founded by Ulysses and archeological discoveries in the area have been dated to the Iron Age.  Through the centuries, the Portuguese capital has been home to and influenced by the Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Phoenicians and Moors, and was a global power during the Age of Discovery.  After the great earthquake of 1755 destroyed close to 85% of the city, Lisbon was rebuilt in a modern style and became one of the earliest examples of the new principles of urban design.  Now it is a thriving metropolis seated where the Tagus River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.  Lisbon's collection of historic castles and churches, museums and monuments and its popular waterfront district make the city an enjoyable destination for everybody, while day trips and local guides make it easy to visit destinations outside the city center like Sintra and the Portuguese Riviera.

Estimated Itinerary

Thursday: Fly to Lisbon

An early flight to Lisbon will allow you to make the most of your Labor Day Weekend.  From your 4 star hotel, located in the center of Lisbon and just steps from a metro station, you will only need to step out the door to start exploring the Portuguese capital city.  3 metro stops later you will be in the heart of the Baixa (downtown) district, near the Tagus River waterfront.

Friday: Guided tour of Lisbon

This mornings tour of Lisbon will show off the highlights of Europe’s second oldest city.  Greek legends claim that Lisbon was founded by Ulysses and archeological discoveries in the area have been dated to the Iron Age.  After the great earthquake of 1755 destroyed close to 85% of the city, Lisbon was rebuilt in a modern style and became one of the earliest examples of the new principles of urban design.

Saturday/Sunday: Free Days

Two full days on your own will give you the chance to experience Lisbon however you want to.  Whether you choose to spend your time on the Tagus River waterfront, taking a local boat or tuk-tuk ride, a Knights Templar Tour, or maybe ranging further afield with an individually booked local guide to Sintra or other area attractions, Lisbon will have something for you.
